Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Script Hasn’t Changed From Before Gunn Firing
Guardians of the Galaxy 3 director James Gunn was fired over two years ago, but the script has changed very little since that time.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer/director James Gunn says the film's script has not changed much since he was fired from the project in 2018. Before directing the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Gunn was involved in a few decidedly raunchy productions, and his Twitter was likewise full of off-color jokes. In 2018, right-wing news site The Daily Caller dug those tweets up and demanded Disney fire Gunn from the production of the threequel, which the company promptly did. Gunn had been trying to distance himself from that style of humor as a creative, but he took the firing in stride and apologized for the jokes. Many of his industry colleagues, as well as cast and crew from the Guardians of the Galaxy films, came out in support of Gunn, asking Disney to rehire him. Soon after, Gunn was brought on to direct the DC Extended Universe's The Suicide Squad, only to be rehired by Disney the next day.
When the dust had settled, all was as it had been regarding the threequel, but Gunn was now going to have to finish his work on The Suicide Squad before returning. In the gap in-between, Gunn committed to creating a Peacemaker series for HBO Max starring John Cena's character from the film. Once all of that is taken care of, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will be Gunn's first priority, and he's slowly chugging along in the meantime. The director recently revealed he's finished the script and that the production heads have been hired. All that remains is to shoot it.
Answering questions regarding his tweet the script was done, Gunn spoke about any differences from the version Disney had when he was fired. Quick and to the point, Gunn simply tweeted the script was finished with no extra details for fans to glean about the plot. He did follow up when asked if it had changed much from that previous version by replying "No very little."
There's not much to extrapolate from such a short tweet regarding the script or what exactly has changed. One could assume Gunn means there were no fundamental changes, including shifting plot points or overhauling the direction of the story. However, it could also illuminate the terms under which Gunn returned to Disney. After nabbing The Suicide Squad and being rehired for Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Gunn was the winner at the end of the day. Behind the scenes, Disney could have reigned him in or gotten other writers to alter his work to steer clear of future controversy. With these three words, it seems none of that happened. Creatively, his rehiring came with no conditions.
Fans who are hyped for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will rejoice. Most would agree Gunn's sense of humor played an essential role in the success of the first two Guardians movies. It's certainly good news the third film will have the same creative sensibility. Though much about the movie remains unknown, Gunn says Guardians of the Galaxy 3's production start date has not changed as of yet. Hopefully, the film comes out sooner rather than later, with moviegoers feeling it was worth the wait.
