Sonic 2 Movie Casts Tails Video Game Actor For Same Role
Video game actress Colleen O'Shaughnessey officially announces her return as Miles "Tails" Prower in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie. In addition to O'Shaughnessey, the film will see the returns of Ben Schwartz as the titular hero with Jim Carrey back as Dr. Robotnik/Eggman, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Adam Pally, Natasha Rothwell and Lee Majdoub. The cast will also welcome Sonic the Hedgehog newcomers Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna and Shemar Moore in an undisclosed role.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 picks up sometime after the events of the first film, in which Dr. Robotnik was sent to the desolate mushroom planet and seemingly trapped, though has returned with his new partner Knuckles in search of a powerful emerald that can build and destroy civilizations. With Tom and Maddie on vacation, Sonic must team up with newfound friend Tails to find the Chaos Emerald before Eggman can get his hands on it. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 wrapped production over the summer and now audiences have exciting news for the sequel.
With just a few months remaining until the film's arrival, Colleen O'Shaughnessey took to Twitter to confirm she is returning to voice Tails for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The voice actress teased the adventure the supporting character will take with the titular hero and expressed her excitement for bringing him to life on the big screen. The confirmation of O'Shaughnessey's return as Tails for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is sure to come as an exciting reveal for video game fans. The actress has voiced Sonic's partner for the past eight years beginning with the Sonic Boom titles in 2014 and bringing Tails to life in the 2020 film. Given the post-credits nature of Tails' appearance in the first film, it could've been understandable for the filmmakers to elect to recast the role for a more fleshed-out turn in the sequel as with Schwartz and Elba's casting in favor of their video game counterparts.
Despite initial skepticism for the first film due to the poor original design of the titular hero, Sonic the Hedgehog surpassed all expectations to become one of the better-reviewed video game adaptations to grace the screen and become a box office hit, grossing over $319.7 million against a $90 million budget. Audiences have been left hungry for more with the sequel, namely the arrivals of Elba's Knuckles the Echidna and Tails as well as the return of Jim Carrey's Dr. Eggman, who received plenty of praise in the first film. With The Game Awards coming this week, viewers may get their first look at Sonic the Hedgehog 2 with plenty of time to build anticipation for its April 8, 2022 release.
