Harry Potter Stars Goof Around on Set in 20-Year Old Throwback Video
Tom Felton shares a video on Instagram of Emma Watson and himself playing a game of "Slaps" on the set of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
Harry Potter star Tom Felton shares a throwback video to back when he and his co-stars were just kids playing around on set. The phenomenon that was the Harry Potter films began two decades ago in 2001 with the release of Chris Columbus' Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, adapted from the 1997 book of the same name (though it was called the Philosopher's Stone in non-U.S. territories). The main branch of the franchise ran through 2011, concluding with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and remaining dormant until the spinoff series Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them began in 2017.
Part of the magic of the Harry Potter films was that the audience grew up along with the people onscreen. The children in the lead roles were roughly the same age as their characters, and felt like they could be the real-life friends or peers of any of the kids who loved the series. This led to a global obsession with the stars, especially the leads who played Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, and Harry Potter: Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and Daniel Radcliffe, who indeed just recently related an encounter where he accidentally made a rabid Harry Potter fan faint.
On his Instagram, Tom Felton (who played the bullying wizard Draco Malfoy) posted a video of him and Emma Watson in costume playing a game of "Slaps" on the set of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The video is surreally mundane for such a magical setting, clearly taking place between shots in the scene where Madam Hooch teaches the children how to fly on a broomstick for the first time. In addition to Felton and Watson playing around, Daniel Radcliffe enthuses over the game while Rupert Grint looks on and Jamie Waylett (who played Draco's crony Vincent Crabbe) provides commentary. Given that this video was 20 years ago, a lot has changed for the Harry Potter stars since then. Emma Watson is likely no less competitive, considering she got a degree from Brown before returning to the silver screen in blockbuster films like 2017's Beauty and the Beast. Tom Felton took a while to shake off the stigma of being mean to Harry and his friends, but he can be seen playing a variety of roles including Julian Albert on The CW's The Flash.
This video is a reminder that, though the Harry Potter stars were launched into the limelight in 2001, they really were just children. The magic onscreen was the result of filmmakers applying their craft to the limits, creating a whole new world around them. However, once they were off screen, they were ordinary Muggle children who needed to amuse themselves during a long day of shooting.
