According to a new synopsis for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Doctor Strange is revealed to be the next central Avenger. Directed by Sam Raimi, the film follows the multiversal adventure of Doctor Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch. The sequel is slated to release in 2022 as part of Phase 4 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Despite minimal information regarding the upcoming film, a recent trailer has uncovered some details into the next installment of Doctor Strange. The teaser trailer follows Doctor Strange being tormented by the unforeseen consequences of unleashing the threatening multiverse, seeking help from Wong, the Sorcerer Supreme, (Benedict Wong), and Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). The film will also introduce a new hero into the MCU, America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), known for her ability to open portals to any world in the multiverse.
Translated by Cosmic Circus, Marvel Studios has released the synopsis for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in Japan. With the absence of both Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), many have been speculating on who would take on the predecessor, with Eternals jokingly teasing that Ikaris (Richard Madden) would lead the Avengers. However, the synopsis provides insight by suggesting that Doctor Strange is expected to take on the mantle and responsibility to step up to lead the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. The synopsis also mentions the variant of the former Sorcerer Supreme, which may be referring to the evil counterpart seen in the trailer. Read the full translated synopsis below:
“The door of the multiverse, full of mystery and madness, opens.”
“Now that Iron Man and Captain America have left after a fierce battle in Avengers: Endgame, former genius surgeon and the strongest magician of them all, Doctor Strange, is expected to play an active role as a central figure in the Avengers. However, using his magic to manipulate time and space at will with a forbidden spell that is considered the most dangerous has opened the door to a mysterious madness called “the Multiverse.” To restore a world where everything is changing, Strange seeks help from his ally Wong, the Sorcerer Supreme, and the Avengers’ most powerful Scarlet Witch, Wanda. But a terrible threat looms over humanity and the entire universe that no longer can be done by their power alone. Even more surprising, the greatest threat in the universe looks exactly like Doctor Strange …”
“Director Sam Raimi, who has expressed a unique world view, will captivate the whole world with overwhelming scale and unprecedented visual experience that will transcend time and space!”
Given the context of the film’s synopsis, it does appear that the following events of Spider-Man: No Way Home have still led to a multiversal disaster after casting the reality-altering spell. Moreover, with realities being changed in WandaVision and Loki, it may have further contributed to the calamity of events in the upcoming film. With the introduction of Strange’s variant, many speculate the dark alternate reality version of Doctor Strange to be the Disney+ series, What If…? live-action version of the Strange Supreme. However, with the presence of Wanda in the film, many speculate that the variant may not pose as the primary antagonist of the film as Wanda was last seen studying the Darkhold. Not to mention how her fingers in the teaser trailer resembled Agatha Harkness’ (Kathryn Hahn) fingers that turned black from siphoning magic from others.
With the highly-anticipated film tackling the multiverse and Raimi acknowledging the deviated themes from the usual Marvel films, the synopsis still only provides a meager amount of details as the possibilities remain endless. As fans continue to theorize Doctor Strange’s multiverse endeavors, nothing will be positively certain until the premiere of the film, but fans may anticipate for Doctor Strange to lead the next Earth's Mightiest Heroes. For now, fans can tune in for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on May 6, 2022.
