‘Caveman of Haughley’ who chased people through woodlands evicted from his hole
A ‘caveman’ who built and lived in his very own underground bunker has been evicted by police.
The 38-year-old man, nicknamed the ‘the Caveman of Haughley’, built the hole in February 2019 in Haughley, Suffolk.
Police had received multiple complaints about how he would reportedly chase locals through the woodland, making them too scared to walk nearby.
Officers later discovered the man had dug a 15ft by 15ft bunker – encased between a series of high walls – complete with steps leading down to his living space, a trapdoor entrance and a roof constructed from timber poles.
Police finally managed to force the man out of the shelter by making use of anti-social behaviour powers.
He was evicted on December 23 and a digger was used to fill in the soil to prevent him from returning.
The man is now being looked after by relatives after living as a hermit for up to four years, police say.
Officers received mixed responses from people when they tweeted about the news on their social media page – with some criticising the eviction.
A Suffolk Police spokesperson said: ‘The male took up residence (initially) in the area around February 2019, living in a tent.
‘Due to ongoing reports of ASB, criminal activity and safeguarding for the male police have worked with partners to use police ASB powers for him to vacate, and the land returned to public use with hole being filled in and land cleared.
‘The dwelling was located in a wooded area off the old A14 Haughley bends, Stowmarket. He is now receiving care from a family member.’
