The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team took on the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers in round one of the NAIA Women's Basketball Championship Tournament on Tuesday, resulting in an 80-57 loss. The Spires finished the year with the most wins in program history, with a record of 21-11 overall. Saint Mary inherited an early deficit after the Mountaineers opened the game with an 11-3 scoring run. The Spires responded with a three-pointer from Alex Specht and back-to-back jump shots by Jerrica Johnson to come within six points of Eastern Oregon. As the first quarter came to a close, USM stayed right behind the Mountaineers, down 20-14. With time running down in the second quarter, Saint Mary was able to get more points on the board from Tanea Sims and Daija Planas, making the score 44-28 heading into the half. Paige Pendley got the third quarter going for the Spires by scoring four of the first six points. Just past the five-minute mark, Sims drained a shot to bring USM within 13 of the Mountaineers. Alanis Delgado made two free throws to bring an end to the third quarter and made the score 61-46 heading into the fourth. The Spires were unable to match the offensive output of Eastern Oregon to open the final quarter. Pendley made a three as time expired to make the final score 80-57.

Softball
The University of Saint Mary Softball team competed in the USSSA Space Coast Tournament last week, boasting a 7-1 record on the week. After an 8-5 loss to St. Thomas in game one on Monday, the Spires rattled off seven straight wins. Saint Mary also shut out four teams and had two comeback wins throughout the week. On Thursday, down 2-1 in the top of the sixth, an RBI single from Sadie McWilliams tied the game up at two runs apiece. Then Delaney Hess drove in the winning run with a triple to right center, giving Saint Mary a 3-2 lead. In game one on Friday, Alexis McDaniel put the Spires up 4-3 after a two-run home run in the top of the sixth. An insurance run later in the inning was enough to help Saint Mary get past Cleary University with a final score of 5-4. Brittnee Wimbish led the team at the plate on the week, going seven for fourteen with five RBIs and two runs scored. On the mound, Jordan Reynolds held her opponents scoreless over 18 and two-thirds innings with nine strikeouts and 12 hits. Saint Mary will open KCAC play with a doubleheader against Bethany College starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Lindsborg, Kansas.
