Pakistan urged to stop arresting Afghan refugees after 250 detained recently
Afghan diplomats are urging Pakistan to stop arresting Afghan refugees after security officials detained 250 of them in recent days. The Embassy of Afghanistan said Wednesday it met police to discuss the “ongoing apprehension” of refugees in the capital Islamabad and neighboring areas. The diplomatic delegation learned that counter-terrorism officials and other agencies detained refugees holding identity documents and Afghan passports. The embassy said it is actively working toward clarifying the legal status of the detained Afghans and expediting their release. Around 1.3 million registered Afghan refugees live in Pakistan, according to a U.N.-backed survey.
