Ishan Kishan, who played in the series against Australia and South Africa, was one of the noticeable absentees from the India team that was revealed for the three-match Twenty20 International series against Afghanistan. Ishan had taken a vacation earlier in the month, citing “personal reasons,” before to the commencement of the two-match Test series against South Africa. The release of the team on Sunday only indicates that he has not yet made himself eligible for selection. However, following the significant disclosure from the BCCI, a PTI report claims that the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is already “looking beyond Ishan” for the T20I format.
Ishan’s withdrawal from the South Africa Test series was explained by BCCI as having “personal reasons” solely. However, “mental fatigue” was actually the cause of his absence from the series, according to an Indian Express story that was published later. It was clarified that the reason for this was that the Indian squad had to travel often without receiving sufficient playing time.
Ishan hasn’t been on the field much this year, but even with his versatility, he hasn’t exactly been able to run between forms with consistency. The youthful player only made three appearances in the five-match encounter against Australia in the two recent Twenty20 International Series that India participated in; in contrast, Jitesh Sharma was given the opportunity to play in all three games against South Africa.
Moments after the 16-man team for the Afghanistan series was announced, a report by PTI stated that Ishan was still taking a break from the game and was now on vacation. As things stand, though, the selectors are also searching for alternatives to the left-hander.
“Ishan was not pleased with his lack of playing time while on the road. He’s now on vacation and on a break. Selectors are probably looking beyond Kishan in any case. If he gets selected for the England Test series, which will include KS Bharat returning behind the wickets, that will be fascinating, a BCCI insider told the news agency.
Regarding the wicketkeeping positions, Jitesh is still in the running following an outstanding performance during the series against Australia, while Sanju Samson has been selected as the backup following an incredible century against South Africa in an ODI last month. Samson has not been called up for a Twenty20 international match since touring Ireland with an India second-string side. Previously, he was left off of the roster for the matches against South Africa and Australia.
