CT man charged with DUI after striking UConn student near Storrs campus
A UConn student was struck by a car Sunday being driven by a Newington man police allege was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
A Newington man has been accused of operating under the influence when he struck a UConn student near the Storrs campus over the weekend.
Police officers responded to the report of a car versus pedestrian crash Sunday, shortly after 1:30 a.m., on North Eagleville Road near the North Campus where they found a student lying in the middle of the road, according to the UConn Police Department.
The student was lying near a motor vehicle that had been driven by 22-year-old Omar Majdoub of Newington, police said.
A university spokesperson said Wednesday the student is expected to fully recover.
According to UConn police, Majdoub failed multiple field sobriety tests at the scene before being arrested and transported to the university police department. Once there, police said he refused to take a chemical test and requested to go to an area hospital.
According to a UConn spokesperson, Majdoub does not have any affiliation with the university. He faces charges of operating while under the influence of liquor or drugs, failure to grant right of way to a pedestrian and second-degree assault.
Majdoub was initially held on a $100,000 bond and was expected to be arraigned in Rockville Superior Court on Monday, according to police. Judicial Branch records reviewed Wednesday do not show any record of his arraignment.
