Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has finally found the perfect role for Scott McTominay.
The midfielder has bagged seven goals and two assists in all competitions this season.
He is also the leading goal-scorer for Man United in the Premier League.
With many players injured, Ten Hag started McTominay nine consecutive times in the league from late October to December.
Kobbie Mainoo’s emergence and the return of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen has restricted McTominay’s game-time.
The United manager has used him as an impact substitute lately, and the change has worked well for the team.
McTominay could be Man United’s ‘super-sub’
The Academy graduate took just a little over a minute to restore the Red Devils’ two-goal cushion over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux.
He earned an assist in United’s 3-0 victory over West Ham United on Sunday.
He nicked the ball off Kalvin Phillips in midfield and pushed it wide for Garnacho to put past Lukasz Fabianski.
McTominay was the hero against Brentford earlier in the season, scoring twice in injury time to win the game 2-1 for United.
Ten Hag gave a consistent run to the €28 million-rated star in the starting XI in the number eight role.
However, his presence made the midfield imbalanced and forced Bruno Fernandes to do a lot of defensive work.
Using McTominay as a substitute looks to be a better idea as the midfielder offers physicality and ball carrying ability.
His presence in the box also helps the Red Devils to deal with aerial threats during set-pieces.
The 27-year-old clearly has an eye for a goal and could be dangerous with his late runs into the opposition’s box.
Ten Hag could morph McTominay into a box-to-box midfielder who comes off the bench to bring energy and industry to the pitch.
