Independence police say two officers were shot on Thursday, February 29, 2024 near N. Elsea Smith Road and E. Bundschu Road.
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- Independence police say two officers and a civil process server were shot on Thursday at a residence in the area of N. Elsea Smith Road and E. Bundschu Road, and one of the officers died.
The other officer is in surgery and sources tell FOX4 the process server is in critical condition. Information shared to FOX4 earlier indicated there was a third Independence officer hurt, but that has been revised to two officers and a process server involved in this shooting.
The shooting location is just south of N. Elsea Smith's intersection with 24 Highway. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office says it's assisting and the call for service went out just before 1 p.m.
The Fort Osage School District says its schools were on lockdown out of an abundance of caution, but the lockdown has been lifted.
Neighbors in the area tell FOX4 they've seen armored vehicles and helicopters in the area, but haven't been given any other details.
