UK weather: Brits face weekend washout with MORE heavy rain as Met Office warns of ‘thundery downpours’ amid -6C plunge
BRITS face a weekend washout as multiple bands of heavy rain are set to lash the country.
The mercury plunged to a bitterly cold -6.3C in the Lake District village of Shap last night as Jack Frost paid Cumbrians a visit.
But it was a markedly different picture at Heathrow Airport in West London, which saw temperatures linger at a balmy 14.7C on Friday night.
The Met Office say up to 8mm of rain could fall every hour in southern areas today as a vast weather front arrives this afternoon.
Thunder is also expected to roll thanks to an area of low pressure moving in from the continent.
It will be a chilly start to the day for many across the country, with temperatures lingering around 7C.
By this afternoon, highs of 14C in Cardiff, 13C in London, 10C in Manchester and 9C in Newcastle are expected.
Scotland will see highs of 11C in Glasgow.
Despite heavy rain in the south, northern and western areas will remain largely dry throughout the day.
These areas could also see some sunny spells early on Saturday but there will be showers in western Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Through this evening and overnight, the band of heavy rain hammering southern England will move northwards.
This is expected to drench the West Country, much of Wales, the Midlands, East Anglia and Lincolnshire.
Scotland and Northern Ireland should avoid the worst of the rain, remaining dry and clear overnight.
By Sunday morning, this rain is expected fade away but it will remain overcast and breezy.
Sunday will see some showery spells but temperatures will remain in the low teens, with highs of 14C in Glasgow, 13C in Plymouth, 12C in Liverpool and 10C in Newcastle.
From Sunday evening, much of the rain will clear and temperatures will start to lift to a balmy 16C in some southern areas.
LOOKING AHEAD
Temperatures are set to soar to 16C in some areas on Monday, giving Brits a much needed boost after a torrid month of rain.
Highs of 16C in London are expected, while the rest of the country will linger around 14C and 15C.
Tuesday will be cloudy with outbreaks of rain in Northern Ireland, west Scotland, Wales and south-west England.
There will be sunshine elsewhere, but showers could fall in south east England.
Wednesday is expected to be mostly dry but showers are possible, the Met Office say.
It will be bright with some sunny spells and turning warmer.
Wednesday will be breezy at times.
Monday will be a dry and bright start for most, with cloud and rain expected to push into Northern Ireland, western Scotland and Wales in the afternoon.
Highs of 16C in London are expected, while the rest of the country will linger around 14C and 15C.
