My 10p trick will keep wasps away from your house this summer – it’ll even prevent them from coming in the first place
NOW that the warmer days have finally arrived, Brits will be spending more time outside enjoying the sunny days.
But, the only downside is that the season brings an abundance of pests – which include wasps.
Homeowners may find their gardens are starting to attract wasps now that the weather is getting warmer[/caption]They are insects which are attracted to sweet drinks and BBQ’s, and can become a terror for those wanting to relax outside.
Luckily, experts have revealed how to get rid of wasps and prevent them from coming in the first place.
Set up traps
According to Chris Walker, The Wasp Expert, it is best to locate it to the nearest wasp nest entrance.
First off, a vinegar solution may do the trick.
According to a study published in the Journal of Pest Management Science, acetic acetic acid, which is what is found in vinegar works.
So if you’re sitting outside, mix vinegar, water and sugar together in a bowl before stirring thoroughly and leave the solution near the nest.
The wasps will get attracted to the bowl, rather than your food area.
Essential Oils
Scents including peppermint, and lemongrass have been previously proven to repel wasps.
Mix some of the oil with water and add it into a spray bottle, before coating areas on the outside of your home where wasps like to migrate.
According to the Journal of Pest Management Science found that lemongrass essential oils successfully repelled wasps, and peppermint oil alone is effective.
Soap and Water
Experts believe a good solution is to use a mixture of two tablespoons of dish soap and mix it in water before adding it to a spray bottle.
Chris Walker says: “The soap clogs their breathing pores (called spiracles) and they die almost instantly.”
However, he warns to be careful as you’ll need to get close to the wasps in order to spray them.

Hornets and wasps – hate the smell of peppermint oil so spraying this liberally around your patio or balcony can help to keep them at bay.
Moths – acidic household white vinegar is effective for deterring moths. Soak some kitchen roll in vinegar and leave it in your wardrobe as a deterrent.
Flying ants – herbs and spices, such as cinnamon, mint, chilli pepper, black pepper, cayenne pepper, cloves, or garlic act as deterrents.
Mosquitoes – plants, herbs and essential oil fragrances can help deter mossies inside and out. Try eucalyptus, lavender and lemongrass.
Keep your rubbish covered
Ensure that your rubbish is covered, which includes any compost and recycling bins.
Bins with a secure lid are a must according to experts, as it will make sure the rubbish is tightly sealed so the wasps can’t get anywhere near it.
Don’t Let Food Sit Out
Experts urge people to keep sugary beverages and food out of reach whenever possible.
Use cup covers and food covers where possible to avoid the wasps flying over and smelling your BBQ out.
