Urgent shopper warning as UK supermarket urgently recalls popular £3 pasta sauce over fears it could contain glass
A SUPERMARKET giant has had to recall a popular pasta sauce over fears it could contain glass.
Waitrose has issued an urgent shopper warning over a £3-a-pot Italian pasta sauce sold in its stores across the UK.
In today’s alert, the UK-based Italian food brand Crosta & Mollica has recalled jars of its Sugo Alla Norma Aubergine, Ricotta and Tomato pasta sauce from sale across Britain.
The warning was made by the Government’s watchdog, the Food Standards Agency (FSA), in a statement on Sunday.
It read: “This product may contain pieces of glass which makes it unsafe to eat.
“If you have bought the product do not eat it.
“Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.”
It remains unclear how slivers of glass ended up in the sauce.
Crosta & Mollica urged shoppers to “not consume” the product and to instead package it up and return it.
The notice says shoppers can phone or email Crosta & Mollica if needed.
“We apologise that it has been necessary to recall this product and for the inconvenience caused” the company said.
The 340g sauce jar is sold in Waitrose stores in England, Scotland and Wales.
A product description on the packaging reads: “Italy’s exceptional ingredients are testament to the uncontrived perfection of the land, like the sun-ripened tomatoes, which we gently cook with crumbled ricotta salata and fried aubergine to make this Italian favourite.”
It represents the second similar “glass in food” scare involving Waitrose in just three months.
In March, the supermarket issued an alert for Pataks Aubergine Pickle, a product produced by AB World Foods that sells for £2.60 a jar, over fears it might contain shards of glass.
The Food Standards Agency warned anyone eating the affected pickle could cause themselves serious harm if they consumed the glass splinters.
The FSA said: “AB World Foods is recalling Pataks Aubergine Pickle because it may contain pieces of glass.
“The possible presence of glass makes this product unsafe to eat.
“The affected product has only been sold in Waitrose and Sainsburys.”
The pickle is also distributed by the online outlet Ocado.
Elsewhere, a Kellogg’s product has been recalled from shops due to a “quality defect”.
Boxes of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes Chocolate Flavour have been pulled from stores around the UK and Ireland – and customers who have it in cupboards are being asked to “dispose of it”.
And a tropical kitchen staple has been urgently recalled after it was revealed it could pose a major health risk to one in 100 Brits.
The warning was made as a precautionary measure to customers due to an error on the packaging of Wanis’ Tropical Sun Semolina Fine and Coarse bags.
