Doctors in Almaty save woman after fall from ninth floor
Tengrinews.kz — Doctors at Almaty City Clinical Hospital No. 7 saved a 34-year-old woman who fell from the ninth floor. She was admitted in an extremely critical condition with multiple fractures and severe internal injuries.
Woman hospitalized in a coma: what happened
According to the Almaty Health Department, the patient was urgently taken to City Clinical Hospital No. 7. Doctors diagnosed a traumatic brain injury, severe chest trauma, multiple rib fractures, pneumothorax and haemothorax. She also suffered fractures of the pelvis, femurs and humerus.
Note: Pneumothorax is a buildup of air in the pleural cavity, the space between the lung and chest wall. This can prevent the lungs from functioning normally. Haemothorax is an accumulation of blood in the pleural cavity. After severe trauma, the blood usually comes from damaged blood vessels or tissues in the chest.
“On admission, her condition was assessed as extremely critical: she was in a coma and traumatic shock, with a high risk of death,” the department said.
Before hospitalisation, the ambulance team intubated the woman and began anti-shock treatment. After she was brought to the hospital, she received the necessary emergency care.
Patient underwent several operations
Because of the severity of her injuries, specialists from several medical fields were involved in her treatment.
Nurdos Kadyrbekov, director of City Clinical Hospital No. 7, said the woman was initially treated in the intensive care unit, where doctors managed the consequences of severe shock and multiple injuries. Once her condition stabilised, she was transferred to the polytrauma department.
After thorough preparation, the patient underwent simultaneous surgery on her upper and lower limbs, followed two days later by surgery on her pelvic bones. The risk of complications remained high throughout the treatment.
“However, thanks to coordinated teamwork and the right treatment strategy, we were able to achieve a positive outcome. Despite the severity of her injuries, by the seventh day after admission doctors had begun gradually moving the patient from a horizontal to an upright position using specialised equipment,” said Ramazan Askerov, head of the polytrauma department at City Clinical Hospital No. 7.
The woman was discharged from hospital on the tenth day. All medical care was provided under Kazakhstan’s compulsory social health insurance system.
