China and Russia blocked anti-iranian resolution at the UN

Tengrinews.kz — China and Russia have vetoed a UN Security Council resolution that would have allowed independent experts to continue monitoring sanctions reimposed on Iran over its nuclear program. While the veto does not repeal the sanctions themselves, it strips them of their oversight mechanis, citing Euronews.

The draft resolution, prepared by the United States, sought to extend the mandate of the UN expert panel for another year. Eleven Security Council members voted in favor, while Russia and China voted against; Somalia and Pakistan abstained.

The UN Security Council sanctions, which were reinstated on September 27 of last year under the "snapback" mechanism of the 2015 nuclear deal, freeze Iranian assets abroad, restrict arms supply deals to Tehran, and penalize the development of its ballistic missile program.

During the UN session, Iran thanked China and Russia for vetoing the American resolution, stating on social media that these countries "prevented another cynical attempt by the United States and its allies to use the Security Council for their own political purposes."

Washington accused Moscow and Beijing of attempting to obstruct investigations into violations, asserting that the veto benefits Tehran and those assisting in sanctions evasion.

Jérôme Bonnafont, France's Permanent Representative to the UN and current Council President, emphasized that the application of sanctions is a "key tool intended to encourage Iran" to return to compliance with its nuclear obligations.
