Islamic group reacts as ex-minister's son gets bail to travel for Hajj

- Shamsudeen Bala, the son of an ex minister who is on trial for alleged 1.2 billion fraud has been allowed to travel out of Nigeria for hajj

- A rights group, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has reacted to the trial judgement, saying the judge has been misled

- The group said the action is a miscarriage of justice and undue indulgence

A rights group, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has reacted to the ex-minister's son that was granted permission to travel for Hajj while he was on trial for alleged N1.2billion fraud.

Nigerians were on Wednesday, June 7, surprised by an Abuja Federal High Court that granted bail to Shamsudeen Bala, the fraud suspect.

Premiums Times reports that Bala was granted bail so that he could travel to Saudi Arabia for lesser hajj, 2017.

MURIC in a statement said the action is strange and miscarriage of justice and undue indulgence.

The group said: ''It is a miscarriage of justice and undue indulgence.

''Permission to travel abroad is usually given to accused persons on medical grounds. Religion is not strong enough as reason for granting an accused person leave to travel outside the country.

''This is a flimsy excuse. The accused is not even going for hajj (pilgrimage) but for ‘Umrah which is lesser hajj.

''It is rather unfortunate that Nigerians engage in reckless abuse of religion and hide behind it to commit atrocities.''

The group however asked the court to immediately revert the bail so as to make justice to do its course.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that Shamsudeen Bala Mohammed, son of a former minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Bala Mohammed Bala on Friday was granted bail in the sum of N100m by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Among other bail conditions, the defendant who was on Wednesday February 1, remanded in Kuje Prison after he was arraigned on 15 counts of N1.1bn money laundering offences has been asked to provide two sureties to enter into N50m bail bond each.
