The pioneering Chez Panisse restaurateur and Berkeley food activist is among 10 recipients of the 2014 National Humanities Medal, to be awarded by President Obama on September 10. At the beginning of Obama’s first term, Waters made headlines when she called for a “Kitchen Cabinet” in the White House. For years, she has been lobbying for a garden on White House grounds; she got her wish in 2009, with the help of Michelle Obama.
