Study shows brain disease in deceased NFL players
The evidence that football causes brain disease is overwhelming, a new study of former NFL players has found.
All but four of the 91 former players whose brain tissue was studied by leading brain researchers tested positive for the brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which can lead to memory loss, depression and dementia.
The findings from Boston University and the Department of Veteran Affairs study, which were aired in a recent Public Broadcasting Service television documentary, showed that repeated head trauma experienced by football players inevitably leads to CTE.
In a statement, an NFL spokesman said the league was “dedicated to making football safer and (protecting) players.”
