Barack Obama likes posing with children for image-boosting photographs, but his dark legacy will be the ordered drone strikes that “nine times out of ten” killed unintended victims – thousands of whom were women and young children. Two days after taking office Obama authorized two CIA drone strikes in northwest Pakistan, which, combined, killed an estimated one militant and 10 civilians, including between four and five children. From that inauspicious beginning, Obama’s drone warfare ramped up further. When a college student recently attempted to write a tweet for every drone strike ordered by Obama and carried out in the last decade, he gave up after 12 hours of constant tweeting, reaching only the year 2010, when the Nobel Peace Prize winner’s drone strikes went into overdrive. “This outrageous explosion of watchlisting — of monitoring people and racking and stacking them on lists, assigning them numbers, assigning them ‘baseball cards,’ assigning them death sentences without notice, on a worldwide battlefield – it was, from the very first instance, wrong,” said an anonymous source responsible for leaked documents that exposed Obama’s drone tactics.
