Petra beat Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-2. Victoria Azarenka advanced over Tamira Paszek 6-3, 6-1. Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, and Princess Beatrice of York came to watch with golf’s US Open winner Rory McIlroy. Spain’s and the USA’s Davis Cup teams for the quarterfinals were announced but included Wimbledon quarterfinalists Feliciano Lopez and Mardy Fish, and Novak Djokovic for Spain but Rafael Nadal declined.
