49ers notes: Hyde back; Rush, Redmond candidates to return
Today, 49ers offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins and defensive coordinator Jim O’Neil, who were relatively loquacious in training camp, had clearly flipped the switch in advance of the regular-season opener on Monday night against the Rams. ** First, for some news from practice: RB Carlos Hyde has been cleared for football activity and was wearing a blue no-contact jersey. ** O’Neil said he expected outside linebacker Marcus Rush to get claimed off waivers after he was released by the 49ers on Saturday. Rush had six sacks and an interception in the final three preseason games. ** O’Neil said the 49ers plan to bring rookie CB Will Redmond, a third-round pick, off injured reserve later in the season. Redmond, who was placed on IR on Monday, sustained a torn ACL in October. ** Modkins was asked what made Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald, a first-team All-Pro, so effective: “How much time do we have?” he responded. Dorsey sustained a torn ACL on Nov. 22 and was limited throughout training camp. ** Dorsey is one eight defensive linemen on a roster that also includes five inside linebackers. ** O’Neil said Armstrong, Hodges and Wilhoite would all play Monday after none of the inside linebackers was named a starter during training camp.
