Poole fires Wulfs to three points

Goals from Jack Rowley and Tom Poole helped Wulfs pick up a massive three points from a tough game against local rivals Lye Town.

 

Lye we’re first out of the blocks and had the games first chance when Jay Holdcroft headed over from an early corner.

 

Wulfs then had a great chance to open the scoring. Jack Downing played a great ball over the top, Chris Knight ran clear and lobbed the keeper but his effort went wide of the target.

 

Ash Jackson then saw his free kick tipped over the crossbar before Wulfs took a 14th minute lead. Downing’s corner from the left was half cleared to Rowley who steadied himself before arrowing a first time shot into the top corner of the net.

 

Lye hit back with Peter Taylor trying his luck with a curling effort that went well wide but after a spell of good pressure, they did find an equaliser in the 29th minute. Jake Lloyd drill a low free kick under the wall and past the despairing dive of Tom Hayward..

 

The visitors very nearly took the lead just two minutes later when a free kick from the left was flicked on by Lloyd and Adam Meacham stretched to head the ball at the far post but couldn’t stretch enough to find the target.

 

Jack Downing then tried to get Wulfs back in front when he carried the ball forward before hitting a low shot wide while, at the other end, Rees Wedderburn tried his luck with a low drive that Hayward pushed away before it was cleared for a throw in.

 

From that throw in the ball was played back to Ben Billingham who hit a superb curling shot that struck the outside of the far post, a great effort.

 

Lye we’re ending the first half in top and went close again just before the interval when Holdcroft struck a low shot through a crowded goalmouth but Hayward was down well to save again.

The second half started with the visitors on the attack again with Billingham firing a low free kick straight at Hayward who collected comfortably.

 

Gradually Wulfs began to get on top and had a chance when the ball dropped to Chris Knight on the edge of the area but he volleyed high over the crossbar.

 

Knight then turned provider as he delivered a deep cross which was headed wide at the far post by Downing.

 

A quick free kick then set Dom Dell free down the left flank and he cut in before firing a low shot across goal but wide of the far post.

 

The pressure finally told seven minutes from time as Wulfs took a deserved lead. Downing did really well down the left, beating his man before squaring low across goal. Dell dummied and the onrushing Tom Poole slammed the ball home from ten yards out.

 

Lye tried to hit back but Wulfs held out to secure a big victory.
