Survivors of New Zealand volcano eruption left badly burned

The death toll climbed to six victims after a volcano erupted on New Zealand's White Island. Nine Americans were there at the time, including a couple from Virginia, who suffered burns. Ramy Inocencio reports.

Merriam-Webster’s 2019 word of the year is "they"

Merriam-Webster announced the pronoun "they" as its 2019 word of the year. The word can be used to refer to one person whose gender identity is nonbinary. The nonbinary use of "they" was added to the definition in September. Searches for "they" on Merriam-Webster's website increased 313% over the last year.

Multiple people killed in Jersey City shootout

Multiple people, including a police officer, were killed in a shooting in Jersey City on Tuesday. Police said two suspects were shooting from inside a convenience store. Both suspects were found dead inside the store.

Holmes says Sondland "showed indiscretion" in call with Trump

Republican Congressman Mike Conway pressed State Department official David Holmes over his recollection of the phone call between Ambassador Gordon Sondland and President Trump, accusing him of "regaling" others with the account. Holmes responded, "Sir, I think it was Gordon Sondland who showed indiscretion by having that conversation over a public line."

Holmes: Ukraine felt pressured to reopen Biden investigation

State Department official David Holmes confirmed during his testimony Thursday that Ukraine felt pressure from the Trump administration to reopen an investigation into Hunter Biden. Holmes said he believes Ukraine still wanted to appease Trump even after frozen military aid was released. "I think that continues to this day," Holmes said. "I think they're being very careful. They still need us now, going forward."

Holmes says he heard Trump ask Sondland about "investigation"

David Holmes, a U.S. State Department official in Ukraine, described during his testimony on Thursday the call he overheard between Ambassador Gordon Sondland and President Trump. According to Holmes, he sat "directly across" from Sondland during the call, and "the president's voice was loud and recognizable." Holmes said he heard Mr. Trump ask Sondland if the Ukrainian president "was gonna do the investigation?" to which he says Sondland responded: "He's gonna do it."

National Security Council expert Fiona Hill testified on Thursday that former National Security Adviser John Bolton warned top officials, including herself, that President Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani would cause trouble for the administration. Hill said Bolton described Giuliani as a "hand grenade that was going to blow everyone up." At the time of this conversation, Hill said, Giuliani was regularly appearing on TV.
