[Ticker] Swedish men drawn to anti-immigrant Sweden Democrats

Sweden's right-wing nationalist party, the Sweden Democrats, stands at 17.7% support, a Sifo survey, published on Sunday in the Swedish newspapers, Svenska Dagbladet and Göteborgs Posten, found. The anti-immigrant party is the largest among Swedish men, supported by 25.5%. In last September's elections the party received 12.9% of the vote.

[Ticker] Merkel and Hollande on joint visit to European Parliament

German Chancellor Merkel and French President Hollande will jointly address the European Parliament's plenary session in Strasbourg on 7 October. "This is a historic visit for historically difficult times", said parliament president Martin Schulz. A previous joint address took place in 1989 with Chancellor Kohl and President Mitterand.

[Ticker] Danish government threatened over migration policies

Danish People's Party threatened Monday to pull support and topple the Liberal minority government if it strikes a broader political compromise with the Social Democrats on asylum and migration policies. PM Loekke Rasmussen announced last week his readiness to accept 1,000 additional refugees without prior acceptance from his supporting party.

German FM Steinmeier said Sunday in Berlin "I strongly welcome ... Russia's growing military engagement" in Syria. His US counterpart, Kerry, noted Russian protection of Syrian leader Al-Assad "risks the possibility of attracting more extremists and of entrenching" the regime, which cannot "ever unite or govern a peaceful Syria".

French data protection authority CNIL on Monday announced it rejected Google's appeal to its formal notice, meaning it may continue to prepare a fine. CNIL wants Google to apply the 'right to be forgotten' from Google Search results on all its domains, not only the European versions.

Syriza emerged as the big winner in Sunday's elections, with 35.47 percent of the vote. It will re-enter the Greek parliament with 145 seats, only four less than its landslide victory earlier this year.

US secretary of state John Kerry said on Sunday the US would take in 85,000 refugees from around the world next year, up from 70,000, reports AP. The figure is expected to rise to 100,000 in 2017. Most would come from Syria.

Russian president Vladimir Putin backed plans over the weekend to build a Russian military airbase in neighbouring Belarus, reports Reuters. Defense officials say the base will host Su-27 fighters. The plans are expected to move ahead without difficulty. Russia has also boosted its military presence in Syria.

The UK's former deputy prime minister Nick Clegg has said a vote to leave the EU would see Scotland leave the UK, reports the Guardian. "Not just one, but two, unions now hang in the balance", he said. The UK referendum to leave the EU will take place in 2017.
