German interior minister Thomas de Maiziere has urged people not to have a "general suspicion" that refugees are a terrorist threat, despite "isolated cases" of violence. He spoke on Monday on German radio after separate attacks carried out by one Afghan and one Syrian asylum seeker over the weekend. But Joachim Herrmann, the interior minister of the Bavarian region, said the influx of refugees posed a "real threat".

[Ticker] EU rejects Polish bill on judicial reform

The Polish law on reform of the constitutional tribunal "does not address a number of important concerns" and "raises some new ones", a European Commission spokesman told press in Brussels on Monday. He said the commission would "shortly" take up the matter again under a new rule of law monitoring process. The Polish government stands accused of trying to extend political control of the highest court.

[Ticker] Turkey targets journalists in crackdown over failed coup

Turkey's authorities have issued arrest warrants for 42 journalists, local media reports, as part of the crackdown following the failed coup on 15 July. The list is said to included prominent commentator 72-year-old Nazli Ilicak, who was fired from the pro-government Sabah daily three years ago for criticising ministers over corruption. Several media outlets were ordered to close after the attempted coup.

[Ticker] China imposes tariffs on EU steel imports

China has announced import tariffs on steel used in the manufacture of large generators and electricity transformers from the European Union, Japan and South Korea, reports the Associated Press. China described the move as an anti-dumping duty to help secure local and national steel industries. The duties, ranging from 37.3 percent to 46.3 percent, are set to last for five years.

The EU Commission approved imports of Monsanto's Roundup Ready 2 Xtend genetically modified soybean variety on Friday, reports Reuters. The commission had also approved another soybean variety from Bayer CropScience. The soybeans will be used in food or animal feed but not planted in the EU.
