Already, dozens of potential jurors have been dismissed after admitting they didn't think they could be unbiased when considering Trump's guilt or innocence. Our correspondent Jessica Le Masurier is covering the trial for us in New York.

Bill to phase out smoking advances in UK parliament

The bill would ban the selling of tobacco products to anyone born after January 1, 2009 –- effectively raising the smoking age by a year each year until it applies to the whole population. The UK parliament kicked off debate on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's planned flagship legislation on Tuesday, despite opposition from many in his own Conservative Party. "This has the potential to phase out smoking in young people almost completely as early as 2040," the government said when it unveiled the plan, calling the move "historic". Читать дальше...

Nadal cool on expectations after winning injury return

The 22-time Grand Slam champion had not played a competitive match since January but eased past the 62nd-ranked Cobolli in 85 minutes to reach the second round. The former world number one has seen his ranking slip to 644 after missing all of the 2023 season following the Australian Open. His comeback at the start of this year hit a stumbling block when he felt a hip injury flare up in Brisbane. For Nadal, a 12-time winner in Barcelona, it was his first appearance on clay since he won the French Open almost two years ago... Читать дальше...

US Fed's Powell says inflation fight may take 'longer than expected'

The Fed has been battling rising prices with interest rate hikes since 2022, lifting its key lending rate to a 23-year high as it looks to hit its long-term inflation target of two percent. But three months of higher inflation data since the start of 2024 have threatened to undermine the expectation of interest rate cuts this year, with one senior Fed policymaker recently suggesting that rates could remain at their current levels until 2025. "The recent data have clearly not given us greater confidence... Читать дальше...

Will Israel have to choose between Iran retaliation and Gaza assault?

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appeared determined to move ahead on both fronts but has not offered a timeline for either. He would likely have to take into account pleas from top ally the United States for restraint after Tehran's drone and missile attack -- as well as calls for the protection of Palestinian civilians in the besieged Gaza Strip. Can Israel's response wait? The Israeli military, already battling Hamas in Gaza and Iran-backed groups elsewhere in the region, cannot sustain active fighting against Iran too... Читать дальше...

Buttler ton powers Rajasthan to record IPL chase of 224

Chasing 224 for victory, Rajasthan looked in trouble at 121-6 in the 13th over but Buttler moved through the gears in his 60-ball blitz to achieve the target with two wickets to spare at Kolkata's Eden Gardens. Rajasthan equalled their own record from 2020 when they chased down 224 against Kings XI Punjab in Sharjah. Buttler, who came in as an impact substitute, reached his second ton of the season in 55 balls with a six off Varun Chakravarthy at the start of the last over. Buttler, struggling with cramp... Arteta urges Arsenal to seize Champions League chance at Bayern

The Gunners travel to face Bayern Munich with the quarter-final tie finely poised at 2-2 after the first leg in London last week. Since then Arsenal tasted defeat in the Premier League for the first time in 2024 as Aston Villa won 2-0 at the Emirates to leave Arteta's men trailing Manchester City by two points with six games to go. However, the Spaniard said his players could not wallow in that disappointment and waste the hard work put in to reach this stage in their first Champions League campaign for seven years. Bellingham 'used to' racist abuse in Spain as calls for action fall on deaf ears

A racist gesture was made towards France's Aurelien Tchouameni after he scored the only goal in a 1-0 win at Real Mallorca on Saturday. Brazilian star Vinicius Junior has been a repeated target of racial abuse and Bellingham said he and his teammates were "used to" have to deal with "horrible" treatment. "I think in the games where we go away in La Liga especially, you almost get so used to it," said Bellingham at a pre-match press conference ahead of Madrid's Champions League quarter-final, second leg away to Manchester City. Dubai airport diverts flights as 'exceptional weather' hits Gulf

The world's busiest air hub for international passengers confirmed a halt to arrivals at 7:26 pm (1526 GMT) before announcing a "gradual resumption" more than two hours later. Earlier the airport, which had been expecting more than 100 flight arrivals on Tuesday evening, took the equally unusual step of briefly halting its operations in the chaos caused by the storm. Dubai, the Middle East's financial centre, has been paralysed by the torrential rain that caused floods across the UAE and Bahrain, and left 18 dead in Oman on Sunday and Monday.

'Everything's lost': Russians mourn flooded homes

In the southern Russian city of Orenburg, the River Ural has burst its banks, inundating thousands of homes after heavy rain and melting ice swelled rivers across the region and in neighbouring Kazakhstan. Vast swathes of the city remain covered in muddy water, piling more misery on its residents. "I saved every penny, I denied myself everything, I tried for the sake of the house. And now it's all flooded - it's a nightmare," says 56-year-old medical worker Lyudmila Borodina.

McIlroy dismisses LIV report, pledges future to PGA Tour

A report in Britain said McIlroy -- a long-time critic of the upstart Saudi circuit -- was poised to switch to LIV in a staggering deal worth $850 million. But the four-time major winner from Northern Ireland swiftly debunked the rumors in an interview with NBC's Golf Central on Tuesday. "I honestly don't know how these things get started," McIlroy said. "I've never been offered a number from LIV, I've never contemplated going to LIV. Again, I think I've made it clear over the past two years that... Читать дальше...

Hundreds of Gazans queue for bread at reopened bakery

They waited for hours in the streets of Gaza's biggest city this week as the bakery turned out bags of subsidised bread after the World Food Programme was able to resupply it. Children stood patiently in line alongside young men and elderly people. "When Israel prevented us from getting flour, we started eating corn and barley, until it reached the point where we had to eat some animal feed," Wissam Dawad told AFP as he stood in the queue. Firas Sukkar, also queueing, said, "I'm happy but I swear by God we are tired". Читать дальше...

The severe dry spell, associated with the El Nino climate phenomenon, has also led to water rationing that is affecting 10 million people in the capital Bogota and surrounds. Mining and Energy Minister Andres Camacho told journalists that the country, which gets most of its energy from hydroelectric sources, was taking "all measures" to avoid energy cuts. "Since Easter week, we limited energy exports to Ecuador. Right now, we are not exporting any electricity," Mining and Energy Minister Andres Camacho told journalists. Читать дальше...

The "Our Oceans" summit was launched in 2014 as the first international event of its kind to address all issues related to oceans, with some 122.3 billion euros pledged since then to protect them. This year's three-day conference began Monday with delegates from around 120 countries. Amsterdam mayor wants to regulate cocaine: AFP interview

In an interview with AFP, Femke Halsema said "you could imagine getting cocaine at pharmacies or via a medical system." Since 2018, the 57-year-old Halsema has run the city known globally for its tolerance towards soft drugs like cannabis and for its lively commercial and tourism sector. But the "war on drugs" has not halted the violent and multi-billion-dollar underworld that sucks up 80 percent of Amsterdam police time, she told AFP in a rare interview with a foreign media outlet. Sudanese rue shattered dreams as war enters second year

The 37-year-old, then detained for his activism, celebrated behind bars when Bashir was toppled in a palace coup. In the heady days that followed, as the army promised a transition to elective civilian rule, Ushari was released, and set to work on his dream project: a literary cafe near the banks of the Nile. Named Rateena, his cafe swiftly became known as a safe haven for young activists eager to take part in building a "better Sudan". But on April 15 last year, the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces went to war... Читать дальше...
