Anonymous NBA executives vote Franz Wagner as top breakout candidate for 2023-24 season
Franz Wagner narrowly beat Cade Cunningham for the top breakout candidate of the 2023-24 season in our HoopsHype executives poll. Wagner received at least one vote from 15 of the 25 executives polled, the most of any player. “I saw Franz Wagner a ton last year, and he’s really good,” an NBA executive told HoopsHype. “His shooting will be the swing skill. If he consistently knocks that down at a higher clip, he’ll be a 20-plus scorer.” This summer, Wagner helped Germany capture its first FIBA World Cup gold medal and was named an All-FIBA World Cup Second Team selection. “Franz Wagner had a great World Cup,” another NBA executive noted. “He does so many things and is only scratching the surface of how good he can be.”

Are there any players that remind you of Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner? Jamahl Mosley: Because the game has changed so much over the years with players getting more talented and higher IQs, you have to give combinations. Paolo is a combination of Carmelo (Anthony), LeBron (James) and (Jayson) Tatum. There are different combinations of things they possess. The passing skills. The ability to score in different areas. The power that they possess. Franz is between a mixture of Khris Middleton, Kawhi (Leonard) and Kevin Durant in the footwork. There are so many aspects these guys take from each one of those guys. You don’t want to label them as just this or that person. There’s a combination of each one that they possess because they study the game and they watch all these great players. -via HoopsHype / September 20, 2023
