Kyle Kuzma on losing vs. Grizzlies: 'We disrespected the game'
Even in a season as miserable as this one has been, some losses sting more than others. Put this defeat near the top of the Washington Wizards’ long list of disappointments, perhaps at the very top. “We disrespected the game,” Kyle Kuzma said after it ended. “We disrespected ourselves.” “Unacceptable from top to bottom,” Tyus Jones said. “Just our effort, our attention to detail from the start just wasn’t where it needs to be, wasn’t where it has been the last couple of games.” In a soft, all-too-often listless performance Tuesday night, the Wizards fell to the injury-decimated Memphis Grizzlies 109-97. It would have been one thing if Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr., Desmond Bane and Marcus Smart had played for the Grizzlies. But all four of those key players sat out because of injuries, as did Brandon Clarke, Derrick Rose and several others.

More on this storyline
“I’ve got to take it on me,” Keefe said. “I didn’t have the group ready to play from the start. We had a terrible first half. We weren’t ready to go. We had been trending in the right direction of starting games well and playing hard, and I didn’t have them ready to go in the right place mentally. Physically, we turned it around in the second (half), but we started too late.” Asked whether his players took the Grizzlies lightly, Keefe responded: “No. Absolutely not. We just weren’t ready, and that’s on me. I’ve got to have the group ready to roll, ready to play. They’re a good team. We didn’t overlook them. But for whatever reason, we didn’t have the necessary ferocity (and) energy at the start of the game. We found it in the second half. But too little, too late.” -via The Athletic / March 13, 2024
