Lake Arthur residents asked to conserve water during freezing temperatures
Lejeune said water levels in the town's water towers are extremely low.
LAKE ARTHUR, La. (KLFY)-- The water issues stemming from the cold weather range from boil advisories to a few towns having to turn off their water supply. As a result of the freeze, the town of Lake Arthur is encouraging its citizens to conserve water and monitor their usage.
Lake Arthur's Mayor Sampson "Poncho" LeJeune said residents are being asked to conserve water. Lejeune said water levels in the town's water towers are extremely low.
"Our water level and our normal water level in our water tower fluctuates from 150 to 160 feet," LeJeune said. "But at one point, the lowest we had, we were down to 131 feet. It's only about a foot and a half of water in the water tower."
Issues with the town's water first started when temperatures began to freeze. LeJeune said he understands the reason people are running water is to prevent their pipes from freezing, but he encourages them to let their faucets and hose pipes drip instead of constantly running water.
"Some citizens call saying you're telling us to turn our water off," LeJeune said. "We never told you to turn it off, we're just asking you to conserve a little bit. Let it drip."
In the meantime, LeJeune said people can allow a trickle or drip at night and turn the faucets off during the day.
"Hopefully, people will start turning this water off," he said.
Until further notice or until temperatures become warmer, water conservation in Lake Arthur is still advised.
