LSP investigating officer-involved shooting on Evangeline Thruway
Two people were shot in an incident on Evangeline Thruway Sunday night, one of them by a Lafayette Police officer, authorities said.
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- Two people were shot in an incident on Evangeline Thruway Sunday night, one of them by a Lafayette Police officer, authorities said.
According to LPD, police were called at about 11 p.m. Sunday to the 1200 block of Evangeline Thruway to investigate reports of a shooting. Police found one person who was shot inside the establishment.
Police then conducted a sweep of the immediate area which included a crowd of fleeing bystanders. Authorities said police witnessed a suspect discharging a gun in the area, and an unidentified Lafayette officer then shot the suspect.
Sgt. Robin Greene with LDP spoke with News 10 about the incident.
"One of our officers during the safety sweep encountered an individual in possession of a handgun firing into the immediate area. The officer engaged the suspect which led to the officer-involved shooting," Sgt. Green said.
Both people were hospitalized in stable condition, police said. The LPD officer who discharged their firearm has been placed on paid administrative leave per LPD protocol.
Louisiana State Police has opened an investigation into the officer-involved shooting. No other details were released.
