Flags at UL lowered to half staff for Basil Brown
The University of Louisiana-Lafayette has announced it is remembering the life of Basil Brown by lowering the flags on campus to half staff.
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- The University of Louisiana-Lafayette has announced it is remembering the life of Basil Brown by lowering the flags on campus to half staff.
Brown committed suicide on campus April 7. UL announced the gesture in a post Sunday on the University's Facebook page.
"With heavy hearts, we will lower the University flag to half-staff in memory of Basil Bennett Brown on Monday, April 22," the post reads. "A senior computer science major in the UL Lafayette Ray P. Authement College of Sciences, Basil was originally from Wolfeboro Falls, New Hampshire, and attended high school at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA)."
Brown's death has caused UL students to question the University's emergency notification service, and to protest what some call inadequate response to calls for help.
"Basil will be missed by all who knew him," The UL Facebook post reads. "His friends and family remain in our thoughts and prayers. Funeral services are pending."
