Chiefs awarded with compensatory pick for 2024 NFL Draft
The Kansas City Chiefs were awarded a compensatory pick for the 2024 NFL Draft in Green Bay.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs were awarded a fifth-round compensatory pick for the 2024 NFL Draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
A compensatory pick is awarded to teams with more or better qualifying free agents lost than gained in a particular year.
Teams are awarded compensatory draft picks between Rounds 3 and 7 based on a league formula that considers a player's average salary per year, snap count and postseason awards.
For this year's draft, the Chiefs will receive one compensatory pick in the 5th round at 172 overall.
The Chiefs lost six qualifying compensatory free agents in 2023: offensive tackles Orlando Brown Jr. to the Bengals ($16M) and Andrew Wylie to the Commanders ($8M), wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster to the Patriots ($8.5M), safety Juan Thornhill to the Browns ($7M), receiver Mecole Hardman to the Jets ($4.5M) and defensive tackle Khalen Saunders to the Saints ($4.1M).
Kansas City signed four qualifying compensatory free agents in the same offseason: offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor from the Jaguars ($20M), defensive end Charles Omenihu from the 49ers ($8M), linebacker Drue Tranquill from the Chargers ($3M) and safety Mike Edwards from the Buccaneers ($3M).
The Chiefs would have had two compensatory picks but gave up one to bring Hardman back in the middle of the season from the New York Jets, who ended up catching the game-winning pass in Super Bowl LVIII.
The Chiefs have these confirmed picks in the 2024 NFL Draft:
- Round 1, Pick 32

- Round 3, Pick 95
