KBI releases 2023 asset forfeiture report
KANSAS (KSNT) - The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is releasing its 2023 Civil Asset Forfeiture report.
According to the Institute for Justice, asset seizure happens first prior to forfeiture. If a law enforcement officer believes property is associated with a crime they can seize it. An asset is permanently transferred from the owner to the government when it is forfeited. Law enforcement agencies can use property or funds that have been forfeited.
According to the report, Kansas law enforcement seized $3,905,540 in currency and property in 2023. Of the property seized, $2,381,788 was forfeited.
In Topeka, the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office seized a total of $153,151 and the Topeka Police Department seized $168,532 with a total of $263,769 forfeited in the county. In 2023, the agency with the most property forfeited was the Wichita Police Department with $409,507.
