AUSTIN (KXAN) — The 'Dillo is back in Austin and will be at Q2 Stadium for the next two years.
Austin FC released its new secondary jersey for 2024 and 2025 and has dubbed it the "Armadillo Kit," honoring one of Austin's most influential music venues, Armadillo World Headquarters. During the 1970s, anyone who was anyone in the music business played there, including Willie Nelson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bruce Springsteen, Waylon Jennings, Ray Charles, ZZ Top, The Ramones and many more.
The club threw an official release party at ACL Live with local musicians performing and the official first unveiling of the jersey. The video game EA FC24 leaked a version of it, along with 15 other new jerseys for Major League Soccer clubs, in a game update in late January and a replica was seen in the Adidas outlet store in San Marcos. Now all the details, and ways to buy it, are officially out there.
The jersey is a cream-colored base with a vintage shade of green, complete with white stripes along the shoulders with the address of AWH embroidered on the back neckline, 525 1/2 Barton Springs Road. An armadillo on the lower portion of the jersey can be seen when it's untucked with a different oak tree logo based on the original design on the front of the left shoulder.
"As a relatively new major league team that strives to be a flagbearer for the community, we believe it’s important to pay homage to the people and places who helped build Austin’s creative and vibrant spirit," Austin FC president Andy Loughnane said. "The spirit of camaraderie and community that came to life at Armadillo World Headquarters is still very much on display today in Austin and you see it come to life at Q2 Stadium on an Austin FC matchday."
The jersey replaces the mint green "Sentimiento" kit used by the club in 2022 and 2023.
