'Zev Award' to be given at Austin Music Awards for its inaugural year, honoring late Dorian Kweller
Ben Kweller said the new award, the "Zev Award," will be given to a young musician every year starting this year.
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Dorian Zev Kweller, a musician and son of Ben Kweller, died before his time at the age of 16 in February of 2023.
His peers at Dripping Springs High School will soon premiere a piece of music, written by local composer and UT professor Ivan Trevino, in his honor. That same weekend, the Austin Music Awards will present a new award also created in his honor.
Ben Kweller said the new award, the "Zev Award," will be given to a young musician every year starting this year. It's funded through Zev United, a nonprofit that supports young musicians and skateboarders.
The award will be given to one musician or music group under the age of 18. The winner of the award will get $2,000 to spend on anything of their choosing that can help move their music forward.
"The arts deserve awards," Kweller said.
The Austin Music Awards are scheduled for Feb. 25 at Antone's Nightclub. The piece written in Dorian's honor will be premiered at the Dripping Springs Percussion Ensemble concert Feb. 23.
