Starting today, September 27, 2018, drivers must give a minimum of 3-feet of room while passing bicyclists on Michigan roadways. The new Public Acts were passed with overwhelming bipartisan support and were signed into law by Governor Snyder on June, 29 2018. PA 279 of 2018 requires a motorist attempting to overtake a bicyclist traveling in the same direction to the left of the vehicle give at least three feet of distance to the right of the bicyclist until they have safely cleared the bicyclist. Shoreline West 2018 was once again a week of great cycling. This was the 32nd year of this bicycle tour, bringing over 470 cyclists together to ride along the Lake Michigan coastline. The tour began in Montague, MI, where cyclists set up camp and had an option to swim in Duck Lake or for the braver souls, take a chilly dip in Lake Michigan! On June 29, 2018, Governor Snyder Signed HB 4265 (Hughes), 4185 (Bizon), and 4198 (Alexander) into law. PA 279 and 280 of 2018 require motorists to give three feet of space as they pass bicyclists on the roadways. PA 277 of 2018 improves drivers education in Michigan to put a greater emphasis on bicycle safety. Where can I read the public acts? The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Amtrak invited LMB and local bicyclists to three press events launching bicycle service on Amtrak’s Wolverine line. Bicycles will now be accepted on the Amtrak Wolverine Service (Trains 350-355), with three daily round-trips between Pontiac and Chicago, via Detroit, Dearborn, Ann Arbor, Jackson and other stops. This year, LMB's hosted our largest Michigan's Upper Peninsula (MUP) Tour ever with over 180 cyclists attending the week-long ride. Our youngest cyclist was only 11 years and the oldest cyclist was 81 years and still strong as ever!  The tour began in St. Ignace, MI, with a free-day that gave riders a chance to plan their own adventures on their first day in the U.P.
