Sports briefs: Archie Williams softball moves into first place
Paige Murphy pitched a complete-game two-hitter and scored the only run as the Archie Williams High softball team moved into first place following a 1-0 home win against Redwood at Red Hill Park on Wednesday.
The Peregrine Falcons (8-3, 6-1 MCAL) haven’t made the MCAL playoffs since 2017 when the school was still known as Drake.
Murphy led off the bottom of the first inning with a double and came around to score on a double by Kennedy Dunsing.
That was all the run support Murphy would need, as she struck out nine and didn’t allow a baserunner after Hailey Carlton’s single to lead off the top of the fourth inning. It was a stunning reversal of fortune for Murphy, who struggled in her first meeting against the Giants (9-5, 6-2) giving up seven runs (only two earned) in three innings in the MCAL opener for both teams back on March 11.
Redwood starter Stella Belluomini limited the Peregrine Falcons to five hits and one earned run while striking out seven.
- San Rafael’s Thomara Drummer threw her second no-hitter of the week, working five innings in a 16-1 victory against Novato (2-14, 0-7) on Wednesday. Drummer struck out 10 hitters after falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning on a walk, an error, and an RBI groundout by Allie Tubach. Catcher Angel Amesa led the way offensively for the Bulldogs (11-2, 6-2) with three hits and five RBIs. Gabby Rodriguez had three RBIs. Drummer had a hit, two RBIs and scored three times. Leadoff hitter Sophia Everett had two hits, drove in three, and scored three times.
- San Marin scored five times in the first inning then held off a late Tam rally for a 6-4 victory on Wednesday. Savannah Reynolds hit a two-run single to open the scoring for San Marin (5-7, 4-3) then Leah Cronin capped the rally with a two-run single. Tam (3-10, 1-7) scored three times in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double by Eden Clark, a fielder’s choice by Elisa Cobb, and an RBI groundout by Rose Dalager. Taryn Ellinthorpe pitched six innings for San Marin, allowing five hits and one earned run.
Prep baseball
Jack Moseley had a big day at the plate and Redwood’s pitching staff held Northgate to four hits in Wednesday’s 14-1 victory in the first day of the Spring Break Tournament at Foothill High in Walnut Creek. Moseley was 3-for-5, with a triple and a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. The Giants’ TJ Beck had three hits, including a double, as he drove in three runs and scored three more.
Redwood’s Jack Gurley struck out five batters across five innings, while Matthew Knauer struck out three and Chas Veley added to the total with a strikeout.
- Marin Catholic got off to a fast start and made the lead hold up in Wednesday’s 8-3 victory over Terra Linda. Jude Baker drove in three runs as he went 2-for-4, and Hunter Valle also had two hits and scored a run for the Wildcats (7-8, 5-4 MCAL). The Trojans’ Felix Doxson had two hits and an RBI.
- Marin Academy couldn’t rally past host Technology in Wednesday’s 5-3 non-league loss.
Boys tennis
Bhuvan Medidi won a super tiebreaker match at No. 1 singles to highlight Terra Linda’s 7-0 victory over San Rafael on Wednesday. Medidi rallied for a 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-3) win over the Bulldogs’ Forrest Reilly. Jack Rosenthal, Luca Ratra and Owen Dearborn also won singles matches for the Trojans.
- Archie Williams swept singles play with a pair of close wins at the top half of the ladder by Johan Jacobs and Anders Jacobs in Wednesday’s 6-1 victory over San Marin. Johan Jacobs pulled out a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over the Mustangs’ Oliver Pool. Anders Jacobs nailed down a 7-5, 7-6 (9) win at No. 2 singles over San Marin’s Milo Reyes. San Marin’s lone win came at No. 3 doubles, courtesy of Michael Reid and Tomas Prada, who won 6-1, 6-1.
- Redwood won three of four singles matches, led at No. 1 by Julian Zhang, as the host Giants defeated Novato, 6-1, Wednesday. Zhang earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over the Hornets’ Indy Stanic, while Redwood’s Julian Monatlik and Hudson Brod won at No. 2 and 4 singles, respectively. Novato’s Alexander Kirsten rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) win at No. 3 singles over Jared Tuatini.
Boys golf
Ben Friedman earned medalist honors with an even 36 at Marin Country Club on Wednesday to lead undefeated Tam past Novato, 194-263. Liam Everson led the Hornets with a 43.
- Low medalist Brody Root’s 36 helped Redwood past San Marin and Archie Williams on Wednesday at Indian Valley Golf Course. The Giants finished with a 198, ahead of the Mustangs (206), who were led by matching 38s from Noah Duncan and Max Figueroa. Nicholas Lillevand and Julian Nichol both shot 49 to lead the Peregrine Falcons.
Boys lacrosse
Mater Dei edged Redwood, 10-9, in Wednesday’s non-league game. The Giants (7-5, 2-1 MCAL) are scheduled to return to league play on Thursday against San Marin. In other non-league action on Wednesday, St. Margaret’s defeated Tam, 18-5. Marin Academy (8-5) defeated Crespi, 10-9, as the Wildcats continued their Southern California road trip.
Girls lacrosse
Tam bolstered its position for the playoffs with Tuesday’s 17-4 win over Terra Linda. The Red-tailed Hawks (6-7, 4-2 MCAL), who are scheduled to play Branson on Thursday, are in third place in the league standings behind Redwood and Marin Catholic.
Boys volleyball
Zach Wulff had 18 kills, 11 digs, and three aces as Archie Williams won a matchup between playoff contenders, taking down Terra Linda, 25-17, 25-20, 25-21, on Tuesday. Setter Ellis Chamberlin had 30 assists and 10 digs for the Peregrine Falcons (13-7, 5-1). Max Brasler also had 10 digs against TL (7-10, 4-2).
