49ers bring back Ross Dwelley, sign Myles Hartsfield
49ers add depth at both tight end and safety with signings of Dwelley, Hartsfield.
The 49ers continued to tinker with their 2023 roster Monday, bringing back free agent tight end Ross Dwelley for a sixth season and adding Myles Hartsfield for depth at safety.
Dwelley rejoins starter George Kittle and reserve Charlie Woerner. His 101 snaps were the fewest since his rookie season and he caught just three passes for 105 yards. Dwelley played in 12 regular season games and his 75 percent of all special teams snaps was a career high.
Hartsfield, 25, played in 15 games with 10 starts for the Carolina Panthers last season under Steve Wilks, the interim head coach and defensive coordinator who now runs the 49ers’ defense after the departure of DeMeco Ryans.
At 5-foot-11, 210 pounds, Hartsfield is a physical player and a capable blitzer from the box. He has played in 41 career games with 19 starts with 115 tackles, seven passes defensed, two fumble recoveries, a force fumble and a sack.
Besides playing 78 percent of Carolina’s snaps on defense, Hartsfield was also in for 38 percent of the special teams snaps. He proves depth at a position which is shallow after starters Tashaun Gipson and Talanoa Hufanga.
Tarvarius Moore, a reserve safety and former third-round pick whose primary role was on sepcial teams, agreed to terms with the Green Bay Packers in free agency.
Defensive end Jordan Willis also will not be returning, having signed with the Las Vegas Raiders Monday.
The 49ers’ pending free agents include place kicker Robbie Gould, defensive lineman Kerry Hyder Jr., tight end Tyler Kroft, quarterback Josh Johnson, cornerbcack Dontae Johson and tight end Jordan Matthews.
Gould, the 49ers place kicker since 2017, has reportedly said he won’t be back in 2023 and would sign elsewhere.
