The injury bug is back again in the Bronx.
Giancarlo Stanton was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday after suffering a left hamstring strain during Saturday’s 6-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins.
Manager Aaron Boone said he doesn’t know the severity of the strain, and Stanton would undergo an MRI Sunday afternoon. With Stanton going to the IL, the Yankees recalled infielder Oswaldo Peraza Peraza from Triple-A Scranton.
“I know he’s really frustrated,” Boone said of Stanton before Sunday’s game. “But it’s an opportunity for, frankly, people we have a lot of confidence in that we can mix and match.”
Stanton sustained the injury in the seventh inning on Saturday while running to second base after hitting a double, and the outfielder signaled to the dugout to leave the game. Boone said Stanton knew that the injury would land him on the IL, but was moving around “OK” after the game.
The outfielder’s latest hamstring strain adds to the list of lower body injuries he’s suffered as a member of the Yankees. Last season, Stanton missed 29 games due to left Achilles tendinitis. He also missed time last season with an ankle injury. The five-team All-Star missed 52 total games last season.
“He worked very hard to try and avoid these things,” Boone said about the outfielder’s injuries. “But, unfortunately it’s something that’s happened with him.”
Boone said Peraza was picked to be called up since he’s already on the 40-man roster. The manager added that the prospect could spend time playing second base and shortstop. Peraza played 18 games in the major leagues last season, slashing .306/.404/.429 with one homer, two RBI and six walks.
This season in Triple-A Scranton, the 22-year-old is slashing .289/.347/.412 with 11 hits, four RBI and five stolen bases.
DONALDSON NEARING RETURN
Third baseman Josh Donaldson went through a workout Sunday and will return to action Tuesday with the Double-A Somerset team, per Boone. The manager added Donaldson will potentially be active Wednesday when the Bronx Bombers take on Shohei Ohtani and Angels.
Boone reiterated that Donaldson is the team’s starting third baseman and will “ease him back a little bit” upon return. Donaldson landed on the 10-day IL on April 8 after sustaining right hamstring tightness in a game against the Phillies. This season, the three-time All-Star is 2-for-16 in five games.
OTHER UPDATES
Luis Severino continues to progress from his low-grade lat strain suffered in spring training, as he threw a bullpen session on Sunday. Two-time All-Star Carlos Rodon will have a bullpen session on Monday. Rodon started the season on the IL with a forearm strain after signing a six-year, $162 million deal with the Bronx Bombers.
Harrison Bader is “doing well” and is scheduled to have a full workout this coming week, per Boone. The outfielder is recovering from an oblique strain sustained in spring training and hasn’t played this season.
Bader was acquired via trade from the Cardinals last season in a deal that sent pitcher Jordan Montgomery to St. Louis. After landing in the Bronx, Bader didn’t play until the end of the season due to a foot injury.
