Suspect in Livermore teen’s 2019 shooting death arrested in Mexico
Authorities believe Tellez fatally shot 16-year-old Emanuel Moseby on July 8, 2019, in the parking lot of a Taco Bell restaurant on Stanley Boulevard.
A man suspected of shooting a 16-year-old Livermore High student to death in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant nearly four years ago has been arrested in Mexico and extradited to the United States, authorities said Tuesday night.
Authorities in Mexico arrested Jorge Luis Tellez in October on a warrant and detained him for several months ahead of his extradition, Livermore police spokesperson Azenith Smith said in a statement. He was being held at Santa Rita Jail on Wednesday without bail on suspicion of murder and other charges, Smith said.
Authorities believe Tellez fatally shot 16-year-old Emanuel Moseby on July 8, 2019, in the parking lot of a Taco Bell restaurant on Stanley Boulevard.
Attempts to reach Moseby’s family early Wednesday were not successful but in Smith’s statement, his father, Earl Moseby Jr., thanked Livermore police “for never giving up and for bringing us into the next chapter of closure.” He called it “a long process.”
Police said Tellez and Moseby argued over something before Tellez pulled out a gun and shot Moseby in the abdomen. Moseby died the next day.
Police went by Moseby’s home in the early morning hours the day after the shooting. They said he already had fled.
Smith said police believe Tellez hid out in Mexico until police there arrested him. The U.S. Marshals Service brought him back to the United States on May 26, she said.
“Our detectives never stopped searching for the suspect,” Livermore Police Chief Jeramy Young said in a statement. “We hope this news gives the victim’s loved ones and the Livermore community some relief that the first step in the criminal justice system has begun.”
Moseby was a Livermore High student and a member of the team’s junior varsity football team.
