Eight Cupertino Post Office mail carriers were honored on Friday, June 16, for each driving one million miles over decades-long careers without so much as a fender-bender. Honorees included Jeanne Ulmmer, a mail carrier for 36 years; Dominic Commisso, 35 years; Ricardo Mariano, 40 years; Johnny Kuo, 36 years; Steve Dear, 33 years; Joe Castanon, 24 years; Mariano Divino Jr., 35 years; and Daniel Chen, 36 years.
“Safety is not just a buzz word; our postal drivers take safety very seriously,” district manager Raj Sanghera said in a statement.
Each driver was presented with a plaque from the National Safety Council and earned automatic membership in the council’s Million Mile Club.
Grants for end-of-life care
The Chinese American Coalition for Compassionate Care recently received program grants from the Palo Alto Foundation Medical Group and Mettle Health of Mill Valley and the Stupski Foundation of San Francisco.
The Cupertino-based nonprofit, which provides support for end-of-life care in the Chinese American community, will use the $10,000 grant from the foundation’s Community Health Care Endowment Fund to support virtual initiatives that include Advance Care Planning community events, weekly compassionate care forums, mindful self-care workshop programs, monthly forums on “Redefining What Matters” and “Spiritual: What Ultimately Matters at the End of Life” and piloting the Coping with Grief and Loss program.
The coalition will use the $19,000 grant from Mettle Health and the Stupski Foundation to support these initiatives as well as its 1-866-661-5687 Warmline, and to create two end-of-life educational videos.
