SF Giants sign former Cardinals All-Star shortstop, rumored trade deadline target: report
Paul DeJong will reportedly join the Giants on Wednesday after signing a major-league deal, per USA Today's Bob Nightengale.
PHILADELPHIA — As they continue to seek to shore up their middle infield, the Giants have reportedly agreed to terms with a former All-Star shortstop who was recently designated for assignment.
Paul DeJong, the former Cardinal, will join the Giants on Wednesday after signing a major-league deal, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.
DeJong, 30, was a rumored target of the Giants leading up to the Aug. 2 trade deadline but was ultimately sent from St. Louis, where he spent the first six-and-a-half years of his career, to the Toronto Blue Jays.
An All-Star in 2019 and runner-up for Rookie of the Year in 2017, DeJong was enjoying a resurgent offensive season in St. Louis before being traded, but recorded only three hits in 44 at-bats after joining the Blue Jays. Toronto DFA’d him over the weekend when its starting shortstop, Bo Bichette, returned from the injury list.
DeJong can serve a similar stopgap role for the Giants, who recently placed Brandon Crawford on the injured list for the third time this season with a left forearm strain. He will likely take the roster spot of Johan Camargo, the other veteran middle infielder the Giants recently inked to a minor-league deal.
Crawford, whose batting average had dipped to .194 due to a 1-for-28 slump before landing on the IL, was set to undergo MRIs on Monday to determine the severity of the strain.
