A woman was swept to sea while walking with friends on a scenic Washington beach, and her body was recovered two days later.
The disappearance of Swetha Chirumamilla, 26, of Seattle, was reported shortly before 11 a.m. Monday, said a spokesperson from Olympic National Park. She had been walking with two friends on Rialto Beach when a large wave hit the shore and she was swept into the water.
Searchers from multiple agencies were called in, and late Monday afternoon rangers reported finding a body on shore. Weather conditions at that time were deemed too dangerous for an evacuation attempt.
On Tuesday, Rialto Beach was closed because of heavy rain and gusty winds. The body was brought in around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, the park spokesperson said.
The beach at the mouth of the Quillayute River, near the Olympic Peninsula’s northwest tip, is known for its sea stacks, picturesque rock towers rising from the Ocean.
