Oakland pedestrian killed after being pinned between vehicles in hit-and-run crash
A person driving a stolen vehicle fled on foot Wednesday night after causing collisions in Oakland that left a man with fatal injuries.
OAKLAND — A man suffered fatal injuries Wednesday night in East Oakland when he was pinned between a car and a mini-van that were hit by a stolen SUV driven by someone who fled the scene on foot, police said.
The identity of the man killed has not been released yet pending confirmation of his name and notification of his relatives. He is believed to be in his 40s.
The deadly chain of events happened about 10:26 p.m. Wednesday in the 4200 block of International Boulevard.
Police said the driver of a stolen Kia Sorento SUV was speeding in the eastbound lanes when it first collided with a Pontiac Vibe hatchback. The Pontiac driver was able to drive to a hospital on their own for treatment of minor injuries.
Police said the impact from that collision caused the Kia to crash into a Ford Mustang and Chrysler Pacifica that were parked on the south curbside.
The unnamed man who was on the sidewalk got pinned between the two vehicles and suffered major injuries, including having one of his legs completely severed, authorities said. He was taken to a hospital where he later died.
The Kia driver fled on foot. Police have not yet said where the vehicle was stolen from.
Investigators said it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors in what happened.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the driver who fled. Anyone with information may call police at 510-777-8570 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
