SAN PABLO — Two people died and a third was critically injured early Thursday after a head-on crash on a major thoroughfare, authorities said.
The crash happened about 12:40 a.m. on El Portal Drive near Glenlock Street.
San Pablo police spokesperson Peggy Chou said the early investigation indicated that the man and woman were in a silver BMW that was speeding east on El Portal when it clipped a truck and veered head-on into a Chevy Camaro.
The driver, a man, died at the scene, authorities said. The passenger, a woman, went by ambulance to Highland Hospital in Oakland but died there.
Authorities did not identify the man and woman who died in the wreck, pending notification of their next of kin.
The Camaro driver remained in critical condition later Thursday morning at Highland Hospital, according to authorities. Nobody else was in the Camaro.
Police did not say whether they suspect alcohol or drug use as possible factors in the crash.
The wreck shut down El Portal Drive in both directions until about 9 a.m.
