Monday marked the one-month point of the 2024 MLB season . The Mets, who started off on rough note and well below the .500 mark, have crawled their way back to 14-14. As we addressed soon after the season, David Stearns signed a number of players throughout the offseason he felt would better the Mets’ offense and pitching rotation. Glynn noted on April 9 how those players were doing 10-games into the season, now 28 games into the season and a day over the one-month mark, we check in again to see where they’re at now.
Offensive Additions
- Harrison Bader: Bader is 22-for-83 (.265) with two doubles, a home run, 10 runs scored, and seven RBIs. His OPS sits at just .616. He recently hit a game-tying RBI single in the 11th inning of the Mets’ April 28 game against the Cardinals, which hopefully gives him momentum heading into May. His solid defense in center field has pushed him into solid WAR territory, but his offense has left a lot to be desired.
- Joey Wendle: Wendle continues to struggle and leave Mets’ fans in question as to why he was signed over the offseason. He is just 6-for-24 (.250) with one double, three runs scored and an RBI. Then there’s the lack of a throw home.
- Tyrone Taylor: 28 games into the season, Taylor is 17-for-61 with three doubles, two home runs, 13 RBIs and six runs scored, making him the most productive of all the players named above. He has a .734 OPS. His best game was on April 24 game, when he had a homer and three RBIs. He’s been a solid fourth outfielder.
- J.D. Martinez: After starting his season in Port St. Lucie and spending a couple games Triple-A Syracuse, the day Mets fans were looking for came on April 26 when J.D. joined the Mets in New York for their game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Martinez is 4-for-13 (.308) with a double and an RBI so far.
Zack Short was designated for assignment by the Mets on April 26. Prior to that he had only had nine at-bats this season and has one hit as the Mets continue to use him primarily as a pinch-runner. He has one hit and two runs scored across those nine at-bats.
Pitching Additions
- Sean Manaea: Manaea has continued to throw well for the Mets. He is 1-1 in five games with a 3.33 ERA. In 24 1/3 innings, he has allowed nine earned runs on 21 hits and has 27 strikeouts. He had a blip against the Kansas City Royals (six earned runs), but his defense didn’t help him out at all in that start.
- Adrian Houser: Houser is off to a less-than ideal start. He is 0-3 with an 8.37 ERA in five-games started for the Mets. In 23 2/3 innings pitched, the righty has given up 22 earned runs on 29 hits. He has walked 16 and struck out 14. Houser has yet to find his groove this season and has fans asking where Christian Scott is at.
- Luis Severino: Severino was the victim to another unlucky game on Monday night in which he took a no-hitter into the eighth inning before surrendering his first hit in the eighth and giving up a run. Edwin Díaz gave up a ninth-inning home run that led the Mets to go on to drop the game to the Cubs after Severino had thrown a gem. The right-handed flame thrower is 2-2 with a 2.31 ERA, one of the best marks in the National League. He has given up nine earned runs on 14 hits, walked 11 and struck out 31.
- Jorge López: López has been a primarily reliever for the Mets, appearing in 13 games this season, notching a 1.35 ERA in that time. He’s been a great addition to the middle of the bullpen.
- Jake Diekman: Diekman is another solid player who has come out of the bullpen for the Mets. Over the course of the 10 games, he notched a win and a 3.86 ERA. He has thrown 9 1/3 innings, giving up four earned runs on three hits. The walks are a problem, though, but he’s missing a ton of bats when they swing.
The Mets have some positive hope ahead as David Peterson was sent for a rehab assignment with the St. Lucie Mets on Sunday and Kodai Senga’s rehab is continuing to progress. He faced live batters for the first time on Monday. Tylor Megill is also on rehab, and Christian Scott is nipping at the heels of the MLB rotation.
The Mets have three more games against the Cubs at Citi Field this week before they will hit the road for a road-trip against the Tampa Bay Rays in St. Petersburg this weekend.
