The New York Mets on Tuesday announced that they have reinstated outfielder Starling Marte from the bereavement list and optioned infielder Mark Vientos to Triplle-A Syracuse.
Vientos played in three games while he was called up. He was 3-for-7 with a home run, two RBIs, and a run scored, batting .429/.429/.857, with a 1.286 OPS. That included his game-winning homer Sunday against the Cardinals.
Carlos Mendoza spoke on Vientos’ reaction to being sent back down, saying the 24-year old handled the news “very professionally.”
“He’s frustrated, obviously,” said Mendoza. Mendoza credited with Vientos contributing to the team while he was called up and noted that he understands the difficulty of hearing you’re being sent down after helping lead your team to a win. Mendoza said he was honest with him and told him, “Go down and continue to be you. He handled it very professionally, I give him credit for that.” He closed by saying, “He’ll get his opportunity here and he’s going to be a big part of this team moving forward.”
Vientos also spoke with the media and said he wasn’t surprised to being optioned back down. “Yeah, I was hoping for longer. But kind of gave me the idea it was just for Marte,” he said. He was also asked if the season has been challenging for him.
“Not really,” he stated with disappointment in his voice. “It’s not challenging, it’s just the way life is. There’s always obstacles in life. Now it’s time for me to see how I take advantage of my chances,” he explained like a professional.
In addition to reinstating Marte and optioning Vientos, the Mets, according to Mike Mayer of Metsmerized, signed former Milwaukee Brewer, 30-year old Mike Brosseau to a minor league deal.
Brosseau has experience at shortstop, second base, third base, first base, right field, and left field. He has even pitched 10 times in the big leagues.
Over the course of his career, offensively Brosseau has batted .242/.313/.428/.741.
Prior to playing with the Brewers, Brosseau played with the Tampa Bay Rays from 2016 until 2021 when he was traded to Milwaukee in the trade that sent right-handed pitcher Evan Reifert to Tampa.
