The successful completion of a two-stage six-hole drill programme completed in 2017 on URU Metals’ Limpopo-based Zebediela nickel/platinum group element (PGE) project has resulted in mineralised intersections that exceeded the company's expectations. The company said in an update on Wednesday that the outcome from the drill programme resulted in an average grade of 0.44% nickel and 1.85 g/t PGE at a depth of between 28 m and 176 m below surface over an average thickness of 4.2 m.

The Trump administration plans to open an investigation into whether uranium imports are harming national security, a move that could lead to tariffs on foreign shipments of the metal, said three people familiar with the matter. US uranium producers Energy Fuels and Ur-Energy filed a petition in January asking the Commerce Department to investigate the matter under Section 232 of the 1962 Trade Expansion Act, the same provision the president used to slap tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

Diversified giant BHP on Wednesday announced that the company had met or exceeded the production expectations for its commodities during the 2018 financial year, but warned of a $650-million financial impact related to the Samarco dam failure, in Brazil. “We have delivered a strong finish to the 2018 financial year, with an 8% increase in annual production and record output at Western Australian iron-ore, Queensland coal and our Spence copper mine, in Chile,” said BHP CEO Andrew Mackenzie.

Turkey's Energy Ministry will open 616 mine sites for exploration through tenders, according to two notices in the country's Official Gazette on Wednesday. The mine tenders were divided into five groups including substances such as radioactive minerals, precious metals, rare earth metals, coal and building materials.
