Nickel and palladium producer Norilsk Nickel (Nornickel) reported a 77% year-on-year increase to $3.1-billion in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) in the first half of 2018, driven by higher metal revenue and operational efficiency gains. The Ebitda margin for the producer increased from 41% to 53%, reaching one of the highest levels in the global metals and mining industry, according to the Russian company, which is listed in London.

When Thailand devalued its currency two decades ago, few in global commodity markets took note. Canadian miner Ivanhoe Mines had a productive second quarter ended June 30, with underground development at the planned initial copper mine at Kakula, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), making steady progress. The mine is expected to reach the high-grade copper mineralisation later this year.

NYSE- and TSX-listed precious metals producer McEwen Mining has closed its previously announced $50-million senior secured three-year loan facility with Royal Capital Management Corporation. Owner and chairperson Rob McEwen is participating as a lender for $25-million of the total loan.

TSX- and Aim-listed Avesoro Resources has reported earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) of $64.6-million for the six months ended June 30, compared with Ebitda of $1.1-million reported for the first half of the 2017 financial year. ASX-listed Sumatra Copper & Gold has placed its Tembang gold/silver operation, in Indonesia, on care and maintenance. The company in May this year temporarily suspended openpit operations at the Tembang mine until the operation could be connected to the State-owned electricity grid later this year.
